Certain schools to include BMI on report cards, too far?

Think back to when you were in school.  Were you worried about your appearance? How about your grades? Would you like to have them both on your report card?  Several states in the USA are going to be adding your child's BMI to their report cards.

There is a part of me that gets why they want to do this.  The rising epidemic of childhood obesity.  Maybe some parents really don't understand BMI, or have any idea what their kid's is.  The schools think that if the parent is confronted with this information, they are more likely to act upon it.

The other (and may I say, larger) part of me, thinks this will be a disaster.  It's another way for kids to get ammo for bullying.  They can already see that the kid is overweight, but now it's official.  I can envision "mean girls" not letting someone be their friend unless their number is such or lower.  I can foresee a rise in eating disorders, particularly in girls.  I can see parents still not going to their child's doctor, they will get defensive instead of proactive.

Instead, their Doctor or Pediatrician should be the ones to bring up the child's BMI, and give recommendations. A school is ill-equipped to do this.
